A United States Note, often associated with the old "greenbacks," was issued directly under U.S. Treasury authority rather than through the Federal Reserve banking system. In the small-size modern-looking versions, these are easily recognised by the red Treasury seal and red serial numbers, unlike ordinary Federal Reserve Notes, which use green seals and serial numbers.
